Meet Limelight’s newest versatile pop duo: Midnight XY.
Made up of first-year Alexandra Byers and sophomore Sam Pomerantz, Midnight XY is a duo new to Limelight.
Both Alexandra and Sam have been surrounded by music since they were little, but only recently met upon coming to Elon this fall.
Alexandra has been playing piano since she was three years old, and her parents were always very encouraging of her musical passions. But, it wasn’t until high school when she joined a volunteer program teaching music to kids and formed a duo with her friend that she realized this is what she wanted to pursue in college. She is now a piano performance major here at Elon and is so excited to have joined Limelight!
Sam is a transfer sophomore coming from Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and is now a Music Production and Recording Arts major at Elon. Like Alexandra, Sam grew up with music all around and was always singing. In middle school, when he was bullied, music became his escape and a way to use his voice in a creative environment.
The both of them met in their Fundamentals of Music class the first week of school. Although Sam says he was intimidated at first, they eventually became the closest of friends. They actually auditioned separately for Limelight, and the Limelight Exec team, knowing they were friends, asked if they might want to do an audition together. Within the span of five minutes, they practiced a cover of James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go” and performed it at their audition. Ever since then they have been making music together and coming together as a duo. Their name, Midnight XY, was actually made from a band name generator they found online. They said the midnight is because they are always up later into the night writing music and the XY comes from their “two identities coming together”. Sam and Alexandra will joke around asking who is the X and who is the Y?
