Best and Worst Songs of 2017

Best and Worst Songs of 2017

2017 was quite the year, to say the least. Thankfully, we had plenty of good (and bad) music to keep us going throughout it all. Below you’ll find what I believe to be the best and worst songs of these last twelve months.

The Best:

“Humble” by Kendrick Lamar

His album this year was fantastic, so it’s only right that I started off with one of his 2017 songs.

“This Town” by Niall Horan

Out of all of the former One Direction members’ music, Niall has definitely released the best music (sorry Zayn!).

“Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B

Definitely the song of summer 2017– or what should have been. Technically, “Despacito” was, but let’s pretend it wasn’t.

“New Rules” by Dua Lipa

This song is basically a heterosexual college girl’s theme song.

“Unforgettable” by French Montana

A bop.

“Body Like a Back Road” by Sam Hunt

I’m not even slightly a fan of country music, but this song was definitely a bop. Perfect for car jamming (by yourself though….you don’t want anyone to know you like a country song).

“XO Tour Lif3” by Lil Uzi Vert

One of the best songs of the year, although I’m a little sick of it at this point.

“Love Galore” by SZA ft. Travis Scott

I declare SZA to be one of the best new artists of 2017.

Honorable Mentions:

“T-Shirt” by Migos

No explanation needed.

“Bad Liar” by Selena Gomez

Just hear me out, it’s catchy and the lyrics are relatable. The music video is a little too weird for my taste but I’ve been a Selena fan since her Wizards of Waverly Place days so I won’t hold it against her.

The Worst:

“Malibu” by Miley Cyrus

This song felt forced for her career, the lyrics were cheesy, and it just was sort of unpleasant to listen to as a whole.  Also, the music video is the epitome of that basic white girl persona that everyone roasts.

“Gucci Gang” by Lil Pump

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a catchy song. But the fact that it took off as much as it did inclines me to put in under the “worst” category.

“Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay

I’m honestly disappointed in Coldplay, what I used to consider as a good band. Once you collaborate with the current Chainsmokers, you automatically lose a little of my respect. Bonus negative points because this song was so overplayed.

Honorable Mentions:

“Castle On The Hill” by Ed Sheeran

This song sounds exactly like every other one of his songs: not bad but not great. He has some really good hits and a good voice, but this song is so cheesy, I can barely sit through one hearing.

Literally anything by Shawn Mendes

Why is he still releasing music, and better yet, why did he ever? Asking for a friend.

Of course, there are hundreds more songs I wish I could write about, as this was a great year for music. If you’re interested in recapping the year, I recommend listening to Spotify’s playlist of the Top Tracks. And 2017, I think I can speak for all of us when I say all that will be missed of you is the music, the movies, and the memes.
